On the shores of Lake Ontario in the Northern Suburbs of Rochester, NY sits a classic amusement park that has been thrilling families for generations. Opened in 1879 Seabreeze is the fourth oldest park in the country and is also home to the fourth oldest operating roller coaster in the world. The park is not only home to amusement rides but also to a top notch waterpark, and provides entertainment and games to round out the fun to be had. The park has been family owned and since day one and has never lost it's nostalgic feel creating a one of a kind attraction in Upstate New York.
Seabreeze was designed as a trolley park where families of many of Rochester's factories and other businesses could go to picnic together and enjoy the day with each other. Around the turn of the century the park began to add rides including a Classic carousel and other mechanical rides. Over the years many new rides and attractions would be added including a waterpark in the 80's and modern rides every few years. The park is not overly large and is fairly easy to walk around with a very level elevation thru-out the park, the park is also handicapped accessible. The park is not like the major players of today like Disney or Six Flags, families still come first which is evident in their ticket prices, food prices and plenty of free parking. The park even offers a Spectator pass for those who do not want to ride but still want to have a fun day with their families but at a reduced price.
Family is the name of the game here and something that will be repeated often, many rides are designed for everyone to enjoy together. The park is also just large enough but also small enough to provide a fun filled day without being overly taxing on you. The park is also reached from all directions very easily and is close to most of the major cities in Upstate and even some of Canada. Besides the waterpark the claim to fame for Seabreeze s the Jack Rabbit wooden roller coaster, a staple since 1920. The ride has been thrilling generations of thrill seekers but is mild enough that everyone tall enough (over 48in.) can enjoy and not get sick or scared. The park also features three other coasters in their collection including the Bear Trax which is designed with children in mind, the Bobsleds which is a unique wooden structure with steel track and provides quick drops and tight turns, and the newest coaster the Whirlwind, a spinning steel coaster that combines the traditional roller coaster with the classic tea-cup ride.
In addition to the roller coasters the parks rides range from the several kiddie rides made just for children, to the extreme screamin' eagle which flips it's riders upside down forwards and backwards. Chances are that everyone in your family will find something enjoyable from the classic carousel and bumper cars to the exciting (and drenching) log flume. One of the most popular rides is the Music Express that sends riders forwards and backwards up and over hills in a circular motion all while music is playing, it's as much fun to watch those riding as it is to ride yourself.
The waterpark is probably the most popular part of the park, drawing crowds all day until closing. The lines build early and remain on the slides such as the Helix which sends riders down an enclosed drop and then shooting them out into a giant bowl spinning around several times before falling out into the catch pool. The newest addition is the Hydro Racer mat slide, which takes four guests and pits them against each other in a race to the finish, starting in a dark tube riders come bursting out into the light and drop over 40 feet to the finish line. For those who like to relax at the water park you can take a ride down the appropriately named lazy river or splash around in the Wave Pool.
The park has a wide range of food options many of which are provided by local food manufacturers including Sahlen's Hotdogs. My personal favorite is the Buffalo Chips, a thick cut potato chip that has been seasoned with buffalo sauce seasoning, the pizza at Seabreeze has also been a guest favorite for many years. If games are your thing than Seabreeze has plenty of them, and they are all under one roof so if it rains on your visit this is a good place to go to get out of it and kill some time til it passes. The park also features a redemption arcade where you can play games to win tickets including the ever popular skeeball. You also wont want to miss the Cirque En Vol acrobat show which plays several times each day and features acrobats jumping in trampolines and performing stunts like running up walls and back flips.
The park is open daily from June 20th to September 2nd and weekends from May 18th to September 8th. The park is open from 11am to 9pm in the early and late season and til 10pm in the summer, the waterpark closes 2 hours before regular park closing. Some rides will not open right at 11am, but all will be open by noon. An adult Ride and Slide Pass costs $27.99 and an under 48in pass runs $22.99, the spectator pass mentioned earlier is $11.99 with the option of purchasing single ride tickets for $2.75 each. Discount tickets can be purchased ahead online saving up to $4 per person, take advantage of this offer. When visiting the park my suggestion is to hit the waterpark early and right away when the lines will be at their shortest, and when enjoying the rides most rides do not have long lines with the exception of the Bobsled roller coaster, this ride can appear to have a short line but it moves incredibly slow due to low capacity so get here as early as possible as well. Plan to spend 6-8 hours if enjoying all the park has to offer, or 4-5 if just enjoying the rides. My finally suggestion is to stay as late as you can because the park takes on a different feel at night with all of the lights, including the night ride on the Jack Rabbit in the dark.
